Here's a song that could be simply described as sweet. It's Cults and Go Outside. Love the Bob Dylan inspired photo too.

Oh Land!

Oh Goodness! Love this. Oh Land and Sun Of A Gun

Gaga Resurrection

Lady Gaga channels Alien Resurrection in her newest video. Time to give the underwear theme a rest in the next one though.

Caribo

One more song for today. Here's Caribou and Odessa. Oh lordy, I think my taste in music is changing rapidly. I'm off to listen to Five Star's greatest hits.

Swan Girls

As featured on Panti's blog today here's a rather brilliant trailer for the cult bad movie Showgirls with the audio from the oscar nominated Black Swan which I really thought was a B Movie too.

Ladytron

Two songs from Ladytron. From 2002 here's Seventeen and from their Best of 00-10 album here's their newest single Ace of Hz.

Big Jet Plane

Angus and Julia Stone are brother and sister and their song Big Jet Plane won the ARIA single of the year in 2010 in their native Australia. I only discovered it today. The video suits the song perfectly, watch it here.

Everday is Like Sunday

I have liked all of Hurts singles so far and their newest song Sunday is no exception. The video has just been released. Here it is. Viva art school pop!

We Are The People

I haven't been blogging for the past few weeks because there has a lot going on. At the beginning of February myself and my work colleagues were told that the bookshop that we have worked in for the past few years and also another branch of the same bookshop chain here in Dublin was closing down. I had worked in both branches. It has been a rather surreal few weeks. This coming Friday will be the last day that the staff will be in the shops. The news at the time of the announcement of the closures was on television, in the papers and of course on the internet. It has been so strange to go through something that is so personal and private and also public as our families, friends and customers were aware of what was or wasn't happening. We all got so much support from all of those people. We were told on a Tuesday that our shops were closing on the following Sunday. We have been working through our 30 days notice. I think the general public thought that we were finished completely on that Sunday in early February but for the time since we were told we have been packing up all the books and everything else that made the shop what it was. I have all sorts of memories from the almost 14 years that I have worked in both branches; friendships, meeting writers and various famous people, friends and family calling in. My jobs in both shops has also helped me pay my bills, go to places on holiday like New York and fund my college course. What has happened over the past few weeks is that the staff in the two shops have become united and as we come to the last few days that is the most important thing. I have worked with some great people over the years and what is wonderful about working in a bookshop is that everyone has something else going in their lives in relation to music, writing, college, family and loads of different interests. I know each person will go on to do something great in their own way. I can't describe the support you get from bookshop colleagues when you are doing study outside of your job, when you do well in an essay or exam. Because we have working away like elves in Elf for the past few weeks there has been a lot of music played in the shop. As I have said before booksellers are 99% indie music fans so as you can guess I could now do a thesis on indie music. I have heard some songs dozens of times thanks to the invention of the I-Pod. I don't own an I-Pod as I can't even operate a digital camera so I played none of my pop. Some indie songs I of course didn't like but there were several that I liked. I think my week in music has to reflect those songs so backtracking to last week the songs below reflect the songs that stood out for me. When Empire Of The Sun released We Are The People I didn't like it. I remember it was Enda Guinan's favourite song in the year when it was released but it is now the song that will always remind me of the past few weeks. I know if I hear it in a shop, in a bar or at an airport in years to come I will think of these past few weeks in the shop and the people I worked with.

Clare Maguire

The latest singer to have a lot of potential success/pressure on her shoulders is Clare Maguire. Her album Light After Dark features her debut single Ain't Nobody and her newest The Last Dance. Her vocals are also featured on The Streets song Lock The Locks and also on Chase and Status' Midnight Caller.
Here's Ain't Nobody which has to be re-released this year. . and her newest song The Last Dance.

Brooke Fraser

Brooke Fraser has been one of New Zealand's biggest music stars since 2003 when she released her debut single Better. She has had 8 top 20 singles in New Zealand and in 2010 she had her first NZ number one with the gorgeous Something In The Water. She's in concert in Dublin's Sugar Club on April 9th.

Hot Mess!

Not the best week ever for me ever last week so I'm glad to do a music post today. I rediscovered Angie Stone's Wish I Didn't Miss you so it's my favourite song of the past seven days. I'm also like the current UK number one Price Tag by Jessie J featuring B.O.B. which I think is much better than her debut single. Sometimes it does an artist no harm not to have a number one with their debut single. An upcoming concert by her in Dublin sold out very quickly which dosen't happen a lot these days in Ireland. Thirty years later I'm starting to like Bob Geldof, his new single Silly Pretty Thing is very poppy and he performed it well on Ireland's The Late Late Show recently. The offical video is pretty awful but, well, Sir Bob can and deserves to do whatever he pleases. Sugarland sang Stuck Like Glue on The Late Late Show last Friday as well. I'm a bit like the Smash Hits! singles review page when I'm looking up videos to new songs on youtube. I like or don't like a song within the first twenty seconds or less The one new song that stood out this week was Hot Mess by Chromeo featuring Elly Jackson. It features the best lyrics of the week too; "I don't know what you want from me, I mean I'm not a bloody social worker". The video for that song is below as are the new videos by Jessie J and Bob Geldof. Strike Curious Poses Chart 7-2-2011 1(-): Wish I Didn't Miss you - Angie Stone 2(-): Hot Mess - Chromeo featuring Elly Jackson 3(4): Limit To your Love - James Blake 4(1): Hold On to your Misery - CockNBullKid 5(2): Going Nowhere - Magnetic Man featuring John Legend 6(3): Good Girl (Freemasons remix) - Alexis Jordan 7(17):Stuck Like Glue - Sugarland 8(-): Price Tag - Jessie J featuring B.O.B. 9(6): Me & you - Nero 10(7):Give In To Me - Leighton Meester & Garrett Hedlund 11(5): Rolling In The Deep - Adele 12(28): Something in The Water - Brooke Fraser 13(24): Promise This- Adele 14(10): The Art Of Love - Guy Sebastian featuring Jordin Sparks 15(19): The Last Dance - Clare Maguire 16(13): Smoke a little Smoke - Eric Church 17(-): Silly Pretty Thing - Bob Geldof 18(18): Somebody To Love Me - Mark Ronson feat Boy George 19(9): Popalicious! - Robin Skouteris 20(26): young Blood - The Naked and Famous 21(11): I'm Here - Jennifer Hudson 22(8): What do you Want from Me - Jerrod Niemann 23(20): On the Floor - Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull 24(22): Who's That Girl - Guy Sebastian featuring Eve 25(15): Lover, Lover - Jerrod Niemann 26(-): Nitron (The Reason) - Eric Prydz 27(16): Black Box - Stan Walker 28(12): Happiness - Alexis Jordan 29(-): Ain't Nobody - Clare Maguire 30(30): My House - Hercules & Love Affair Here's Hot Mess by Chromeo featuring Elly Jackson. and Price Tag by Jessie J featuring B.O.B and Silly Pretty Thing by Bob Geldof

Some Kind Of...

Jody Watley's debut solo album Looking For A New Love had some classic pop songs including the title song. Here's two songs from that album.
The first is Some Kind of Lover. . and Still A Thrill. .

Love Long Distance

Here's The Gossip and a live version of Love Long Distance.

Dancing In The Moonlight

I featured this song before but when I heard it again this evening I remembered hearing in my friend Brian's house years ago. It's the Pet Shop Boys and one of their quality b-sides The Truck Driver and his Mate, which has to be one of the best song titles ever. .

James Blake

There is very rarely much indie music to be found on this blog but one song that I am loving recently is James Blake and his version of the Feist song Limit To your Love.

Wish I Didn't Miss you

Here's a song that I heard a few times over the past few years and I had no idea who it was by. One of the guys in work had the song on his I-Pod and I finally found out who sang it. It's Wish I didn't Miss you by Angie Stone. It was featured on her 2001 album Mahogany Soul. The video, which of course is embedded on youtube , is here.
. Wish I Didn't Miss you sampled the O'Jay's song Back Stabbers.

I Have A New Theme Song

The best new song that I heard last week was the Motownesque Hold on To your Misery by CockNBullKid. Magnetic Man featuring John Legend and Getting Nowhere is also becoming one of my most listened to songs. The jury is out on Adele's cover of Cheryl's Cole's Promise This but that is mainly because I thought the original was one of the worst songs of 2010. That cover and Hold On To your Misery are below. Strike Curious Poses Chart: 31-1-2011 1(-): Hold On to your Misery - CocknBullKid 2(8): Getting Nowhere - Magnetic man featuring John Legend 3(1): Good Girl (Freemasons remix) _ Alexis Jordan 4(5): Limit To your Love - James Blake 5(4): Rolling In The Deep - Adele 6(6): Me and you - Nero 7(2): Give In To Me - Leighton Meester & Garrett Hedlund 8(-): What Do you Want - Jerrod Niemann 9(3): Popalicious - Robin Skouteris 10(11):The Art Of Love - Guy Sebastian featuring Jordin Sparks 11(7): I'm Here - Jennifer Hudson 12(9): Happiness- Alexis Jordan 13(10):Smoke a Little Smoke - Eric Church 14(-): Brother - Smashproof featuring Gin Wigmore 15(-): Lover, Lover - Jerrod Niemann 16(16): Black Box - Stan Walker 17(19): Stuck Like Glue - Sugarland 18(14): Somebody To Love Me - Mark Ronson feat Boy George 19(26): The Last Dance - Clare Maguire 20(24): On The Floor - Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull 21(18): Punching in A Dream - The Naked and Famous 22(15): Who's That Girl - Guy Sebastian featuring Eve 23(13): Love Long Distance - The Gossip 24(- ): Promise This - Adele 25(18): Get Outta My Way - Kylie Minogue 26(22): young Blood - The Naked and Famous 27(23): Stay - Hurts 28(17): Something in the Water - Brooke Fraser 29(25): Jigsaw - Ryan Sheridan 30(21): My House - Hercules And Love Affair Here's Hold On To your Misery by CockNBullKid . and Adele's cover version of Promise This.
